Mobile phones were created to help people connect, but with so many conduits to virtual communication and entertainment we can sometimes neglect real-life experiences and social opportunities.
Symphoney was an art experiment designed to free people from digital entanglement with the creation of a collective spectacle: a clear bowl FULL of phones all going off at the same time. Participants would register their devices with "Symphoney Specialists" who coordinated alarms, took stock of the hardware, and prepped the performance. A "Crescendo" culminated at the programmed hour and unleashed a wave of sounds, vibrations, and flashing screens. Every performance was unique and required participation of the audience to flourish.
Symphoney events were held at FIGMENT New York on June 8 & 9, 2013.
